Two (2) chemical recycling days will be available in 2025 for Northfield Township residents only

On Saturday, May 31 and Saturday, October 25, from 9AM to 1PM, only Northfield Township residents may drop off accepted household chemical waste at 237 Melvin Drive in Northbrook. 

Program Overview & Disposal Info

Since the majority of hazardous materials used in homes today can be either recycled, reused, or can be safely destroyed, the Northfield Township Road District’s Highway Commissioner has entered into an agreement with Tradebe Environmental Services to create a limited Household Hazardous Waste Program for our homeowners in Northfield Township to safely dispose of their unwanted household cleaning and maintenance products.

Resident Guidelines & Requirements

Our Household Hazardous Waste program is a way in which we can offer homeowners of Northfield Township an alternative to disposal of certain chemicals in a landfill. The Road District has made it simple.

  • Residents please be ready to clearly show your Identification indicating you reside within Northfield Township. This service is only for Northfield Township Residents, all others will be turned away.
  • Residents will be responsible for removing items from their vehicles. 

Accepted & Prohibited Materials

We will be checking identification to ensure Northfield Township residency. The following items will be accepted: antifreeze, cleaning products that are consumer commodities only, charcoal lighter fluid, driveway sealer (limit of 2 five gallon buckets), drain cleaners, paint thinners and gasoline in approved/original containers only, insecticides and herbicides.

  • NO medical waste of any kind
  • NO propane cylinders or fire extinguishers of any size
  • NO items containing Mercury
  • NO pool chemicals
  • NO business/commercial waste accepted
  • NO photography chemicals
  • All items must be in original containers

Final Processing & Contact Info

The waste is then sorted and prepared for shipment, ensuring all DOT and EPA regulations are met. The material is then transported to the Tradebe Environmental Services facility for proper disposal/recycling.

Household hazardous waste — things like old paint, cleaners, pesticides, automotive fluids, and batteries — should never go in the trash or down the drain. The Northfield Township Road District gives residents a free, safe way to dispose of these materials at its recycling center in Northbrook.

What Counts as Household Hazardous Waste

Common household hazardous waste includes oil-based paints and stains, solvents and thinners, pool and garden chemicals, pesticides, motor oil and antifreeze, and many batteries. When in doubt, it is safer to bring an item in for proper handling than to throw it away.

Why Safe Disposal Matters

Improperly discarded household hazardous waste can contaminate soil, storm drains, and local waterways, and can be dangerous to sanitation workers. Disposing of it through the District keeps these materials out of the environment and out of Northfield Township landfills.

When and Where to Drop Off

Household hazardous waste is accepted during the recycling season, generally April through October, at 237 Melvin Drive in Northbrook. Because accepted items and quantities can change, please confirm current guidelines before you visit.
